My Trip to Chicago and the Friends I Met Along the Way: La Circuit, La Chesterfield’s and La Cueva
archival inkjet prints
4.5 x 3
Initially started in the Spring of 2000; I began conducting brief collaborations with club patrons handing out disposable cameras asking each participant to photograph and document that night’s activities. Over time my approach developed further and I was documenting my friends, the people I met along with the space itself. The piece has evolved into a collection of images printed at 4½ x 3. The nature of the image size lends itself to the travel snapshot and as a result we are presented with intimate gazes of men; snapshots of couples and friends, surrounded by deep backgrounds of colored lights and black-filled spaces within the nightclub’s environment. The documentation of space and the people that make up these spaces has always been a focus in my work and so the photographs collected here continue with those themes and locations where one might find friendship, lovers, and a temporary community.
