Super Flea Portrait Project
SUPER FLEA PORTRAITS is a collaborative portraiture and community engagement project led by artists Anthony Marcos Rea and Isaac Tapia designed to document and celebrate the cultural richness of Kansas City’s Historic Northeast community. Centered at the Super Flea market - a multicultural hub of commerce, economic resilience, and cultural exchange; the project aims to amplify the voices and visibility of an underrepresented and many time misrepresented community through contemporary portraiture, interviews, and a site-specific exhibition. While the Super Flea remains largely absent from the city’s dominant narrative, it is shaped daily by the working-class and immigrant families, small business owners, and everyday patrons whose stories help to define the identity of the Northeast and Kansas City. By embedding the work within the community that inspires it, SUPER FLEA PORTRAITS transforms a commercial space into a site of cultural reflection and artistic intervention, asking what it means to be seen, whose stories are told, and how art can serve as a bridge between people, place, and the possibilities of a community. We believe this project is not only a portrait series, but a portrait of a place shaped by the people who give it life.
